Who's Really in Charge - Old Brain or New Brain?
Dr. John
Schinnerer uses a Jim Gaffigan-style approach to infuse humor with cutting-edge
psychology in this talk on the automatic, unconscious mind and the conscious,
rational mind. Which one is really in charge? What if 90% of what you say, think
and do is automatic? Do you still have free will? Using the metaphor of a rider
atop a stallion for the mind, the rider is the conscious part of your mind and
the stallion is your automatic, unconscious mind. What if the stallion is
actually dragging the rider along? Ever have a blackout; go on autopilot? Who's
manning the ship at that point? Find out in this entertaining show. Dr. John

Exceptional Team Building with Dean Tracy
Dr. John chats with Dean Tracy, a
20 year veteran of corporate leadership and exceptional management, about what
it takes to build exceptional teams at work. Our entire economy is built on the
assumption that human beings must work cooperatively in teams in order to get
stuff done. Yet, there’s a huge difference between an effective team and a
dysfunctional one. As usual, it's not black or white; it’s a matter of degree.
To what extent are you inspiring the best performance from your teammates
at work? To what extent are you encouraging the best from your family
members at home? That’s right – all of this applies to your family as well!
Purpose. Leadership. Structure. Engagement. Clear Expectations and more!

Having No Words For Feelings - Alexithymia
What do you do
if you can't tell how you feel? Alexithymia literally means 'having no
words for feelings,' and it is rampant in America today, particularly in
men.
Dr. John Schinnerer shares what alexithymia is and how to begin to overcome it.
In a
society that idealizes the unemotional, macho male, we teach our boys to
suppress their feelings. Then they grow up to be men without words for feelings
so they are limited to responding with silence or violence.

Positive, Sustainable
Change on a Global Basis with
Tom
Munnecke, Founder of The Uplift Academy
Join Guide To Self
for an out of the box show. Dr. John Schinnerer talks with Tom Munnecke, founder
of Uplift Academy
and a former Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, about positive change on a
global basis.
Where Dr. John is passionate about helping individuals manage their internal
world, their thoughts and feelings, and their immediate relationships, Tom is
passionate about helping groups of individuals using the power of the web to
create a better world. Idealistic? Absolutely. Foolish? Not a bit.
After 30 years designing large scale hospital information systems, Tom quit his
job as a vice president and chief scientist at a Fortune 500 company. He asked
himself, "What is the simplest thing I can do which will have the greatest
benefit for humanity?" In 2003, Tom took a position as a Visiting Scholar at
Stanford University's Digital Visions Program during which he shifted his focus
from purely charitable giving and philanthropy to a more general notion of
humanitarian uplift, which was based on Jon Haidt’s notion of the positive
emotion of elevation. Most recently Tom founded the Uplift Academy, a think tank
where visionaries can discuss big ideas about philanthropy, networking and
giving back to society.

Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life author
Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D.
Dr.
Marshall Rosenberg is a worldwide leader in peaceful communication, he is the
founder and director of the Center for Nonviolent Communication. He’s authored
numerous books including Nonviolent communication. He spends more than 250 days

local communities including some the most impoverished, war-torn states of the
world. His PhD is in clinical psychology from University of Wisconsin where he
studied under the now famous Carl Rogers.
According
to Dr. Rosenberg, there are two major questions in life which need answering:
1.) What happens to disconnect us from our compassionate nature, leading us to
behave violently and exploitatively?
2.) What allows some people to stay connected to their compassionate nature
under the most trying circumstances?

Exceptional Emotional Management, Part 4
Contempt
and Embarrassment and More!
Dr. John flaps his gums about
the final piece of exceptional emotional management, only two emotions left to
cover – contempt and embarrassment. If you want exceptional management of your
emotions under great stress, you’d better be familiar with the
patterns that accompany emotions. You must get familiar with these
patterns when you’re not stressed out or angry.
So what are the triggers that
fire up your negative emotions? Harsh words from a parent? Feeling
unappreciated at work? Criticism after you’ve put forth a tremendous effort?
You’ll need to know what sparks these negative, destructive emotions – anger,
fear, contempt. The more you experiment during calm times, the more you’ll be
prepared for volatile situations.
Dr. John
also discusses the unusually high degree of optimism in Africa, the word you
want to use in a disagreement to ensure successful resolution and the dangers of
bringing work home with you.

Dealing With Life Leeches - General Tips and Specifics for The Whiner and
The Blamer -
Part 1
Learn the
latest and best ways to DEAL with each type of life leech. These leeches take
our energy and leave us feeling drained and down. They are a hurdle to a happy
life and our goal is happiness. So how do you deal with each type of life leech?
You'll find out in this show the specific ways, the top ways, to deal with
people who are explosive, whining, angry, sad, mean, vicious or simply unaware.
Studies have shown that the most important element for our happiness is our
relationships with other people. So you want to be aware of how other people
affect you. You want to know how to deal with those individuals who are less
than positive. You want to know how to protect yourself.
Unfortunately, most of us were not taught any skills to identify these energy
leeches or to protect ourselves against them. The usual result is that we put up
with their displaced anger, their chronic chaos, and their never-ending
neediness. We feel we don’t have another choice. Now... we have a choice.
On this show, Dr. John Schinnerer shares the strategies that he teaches to his
clients to deal with life leeches. General tips to protect yourself against life
leeches are discussed as well as particular strategies for the Whiner (The
whiner comes across as the eternal victim.), and the Blamer (the judgmental,
finger-pointing leech).

The Need for Emotional IQ in the Workplace
The top indicator for success in
managers and executives is emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is a prerequisite for
success in the workplace. Not only that, EQ is necessary for a successful home
life, marriage and spiritual life. Emotions are the primary driving force in our
lives. They underlie every thought we have and every action we take.
Emotional intelligence means that you are aware of what you are feeling WHEN you
are feeling it. It means that you can manage those emotions so you aren't
blowing up at the wrong people. It means you can read the emotional
undercurrents of groups. And it means that you have the integrity and courage to
manage your relationships in a healthy manner. Find out more as Dr. John

be reduced to a number: 2.9. The number is a ratio of the amount of time spent
in positive emotion compared to negative emotion. So the thriving individual
